Coordinated UK-French Aerial Assault Strikes IS Munitions Store in the Syrian region
Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
