Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
